Sheriff Bobby R. Suttles
Sheriff Bobby R. Suttles has served the citizens of Haywood County for over 35 years as a law enforcement officer. He started his career in 1973 with the North Carolina Highway Patrol. In 1974 Sheriff Suttles went to the Waynesville Police Department. He served there until 1986 as a Patrolmen, Sergeant, and Detective.
From 1987 until 1995 Suttles was a Company Police Officer at Champion International Paper Mill.
In 1992 Suttles was sworn as a Special Deputy with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office under former Sheriff Tom Alexander. Bobby was hired full time in 1995. His leadership skills and experience assisted him to move quickly up through the ranks from Patrol Deputy to Sergeant to Lieutenant. In 2003 Sheriff Alexander appointed Suttles as his Chief Deputy, second in command of the 100 person agency.
In February of 2009 Tom Alexander retired after 22 years as a very popular Sheriff. Bobby Suttles had earned the respect and trust of the citizens of Haywood County through a reputation of integrity and fairness. With overwhelming community support, Suttles was appointed by the Democrat party to finish Tom Alexander’s term as Sheriff of Haywood County.
Sheriff Suttles’ has a vision for the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office that holds onto the values and honor of the past but embraces the innovation, technology, and training of the 21st century. Sheriff Suttles’ goal is to provide to our mountain community law enforcement service that is second to none and puts the citizens of Haywood County first.
