The Child Support Enforcement Deputy works in cooperation with the Department of Social Services to collect delinquent child support payments from deadbeat parents. Many of these parents would never support their children if they were not under the threat of a visit from the Child Support Enforcement Deputy. These children are already disadvantaged because of a broken home and this support is critical to their well-being and success. When a parent falls behind on payments, the court issues process to bring them before a Judge to work out the delinquency and get back on track. These papers are served by the Child Support Enforcement Deputy. If the parent still does not pay their child support than a Judge may issue an Order For Arrest. The Child Support Enforcement Deputy then goes out and finds the defendant and arrests them. He then turns them over to the County Jail and they are not released until they pay the “purge” or amount in arrears. Often the Defendant is allowed work release arrangements to allow them to earn money to pay the purge. If they fail to gather the money after a time the Judge may allow them to be released after working out arrangements to pay. The Child Support enforcement Deputy provides a critical service to the children of Haywood County. The Deputy who handles this responsibility is one of the most active process servers in the Department. He regularly organizes “round-up” type operations enlisting the help of multiple Deputies and other law enforcement agencies in the County. Parents who flatly refuse to support their children are well acquainted with this Deputy. During 2007 The Child Support Deputy facilitated the collection of over $4 million in back child support payments for the fourth year in a row.
