Narcotics Division
The Haywood County Sheriff’s Narcotics Division is manned by two investigators dedicated to major drug cases. Nationwide statistics consistently show that a large percentage of property crimes are committed as a direct result of drug activity. The safety and quality of life of the citizens of Haywood County is impacted by illicit drug activity occurring within the communities and neighborhoods of Haywood County.
In 2007 the Unit saw a continued drop in the number of clandestine methamphetamine labs from 4 in 2006 to 2 in 2007 representing a drop of 50%. This can be attributed to a combination of aggressive enforcement by the Narcotics Unit and the 2006 federal laws regulating the sale of over-the-counter medications containing precursor chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamines. The war on drugs can only be won with the help of the citizens in Haywood County.
The Unit also saw an increase in help from the public with a 114% increase in intelligence reports. These are generated both by Deputies and concerned citizens. There were 118 such reports in 2006 and 252 in 2007. This resulted in a solid 153% increase in actions taken by the unit in 2007. They conducted 68 investigations in 2006 and 172 in 2007.
The unit also conducted 61 undercover operations in 2007 and extended 27 limited assists to other law enforcement agencies inside and outside of Haywood County.
