Sex Offender Registration
North Carolina now has a Sex Offender Registration for anyone sentenced or convicted of a sexual offense and released after January 1st, 1996. There is a public list of Sex Offenders registered in Haywood County located in the Sheriffs Office.
If you are a Sex Offender who moves into Haywood County from another county or from out of state, or were convicted and released after January 1st, 1996, you must register at the Haywood County Sheriff's Office within 3 days.
You must also notify the Sheriff's Office of any address changes. Failure to do either will result in you being charged with a criminal offense. Sex offenders are listed by the State of North Carolina on the Internet and a listing is also kept at the Sheriff’s Office for review on request. Offenses of registered sex offenders are public information by legislative mandate. You can also click on the link to the left and go directly to the registry.
There have been several legislative changes in 2006, 2007, and 2008 that will impact sex offenders in North Carolina. Address verification letters will be mailed twice a year and offenders must report in person to the sheriff’s office where they are registered within 3 days of receipt of each letter. Any changes to employment, academic status, address, etc must be done in person. There are changed in the residential restrictions that apply to persons that establish residences within 1,000 feet of a public or private school or child care center after December 1, 2006.
