| Special Deputies Special Deputies are a volunteer unit within the Patrol Division. Special deputies are required to work 24 hours per month to maintain their certification. Special deputies have the same authority and jurisdiction as full-time deputies. They are required to complete the same training that full time deputies are required to complete. This includes four months of Basic Law Enforcement Training, 468 hour with a Field Training Officer, and 24 hours per year of in-service as well as firearms qualifications. They must also go through the same certification process that full time Deputies undergo including drug testing, an extensive background check, and written and oral exams. Many of the Specials undertook all of their initial training at their own expense and without pay from the county. Many of the hours worked by Special Deputies are volunteer time donated to the citizens of Haywood County. Some hours are paid at the part time rate which is considerably lower than the pay rate of full time deputies. These Deputies are invaluable when extra manpower is needed for special events, natural disasters or other emergencies, or to cover shifts for Deputies who are out because of training, sickness, or vacation. |
